How to Use Essential Oils and Supplements
What about Ningxa Red and Ningxa Wolfberries? Are they safe for the family Pet???
Yes and Yes
The drink is the strongest for anti-oxidant potential. All the berries in the drink are safe.
At Marila Veterinary clinic we encourage the use of Ningxa Red for debilitated, aged, and recovering pets.
Amounts:
Feline – 1/4 oz per day
Small canine – 1/2-1 oz per day
Large canine – 2 oz per day

What if my pet does not drink Ningxa Red but will drink the other drinks?
As long as there is no ingredient in the other drink that would be toxic it should be ok. Pets have different taste preferences as do humans. Marila Veterinary Clinic cannot vouch for the other drinks as far as safe use in pets and amounts.
Another antioxidant that is recommended is Longevity. The capsule is helpful to neutralize the fat-based oxidants. Ningxa Red addresses the water based oxidants. The two products used together take care of most oxidants.
Use:
Large canine 1 capsule per day
Smaller canine (use Longevity essential oil instead) 2 drops/gel capsule per day
Feline (use Longevity essential oil ) 1 drop / gel capsule once per day

Thieves products
Thieves is in a dish soap and in a laundry detergent form now. Thieves is the main cleaner we use at Marila Veterinary Clinic. We take care of rescue cats. Upper respiratory infections are a given for this population. Thieves has kept the contagious viruses under control. Rarely, if ever, do the house cats come down with any respiratory conditions. Granted the house cats may have a healthy immune system however the stress of new cats coming and going would make them occasionally susceptible. This is not the case in that they have had only a mild case of sneezing in the past years. Marila Veterinary Clinic would recommend Thieves in all its product forms to help keep the pet family healthy. With the new products, it will make it easy to wash the bowls and kennels, launder the blankets and pillows, and eliminate infectious agents more easily. By adding this to the available options to maintain pet health, the family pet will have a better quality of life.
Thieves cleaner is used extensively for patient care. It must be diluted but it is used for wound soaks, flushing of wounds, and soaking of instruments.
Thieves mouth wash is used for dental and associated oral uses. It must be diluted but serves to provide not only topical pain relief but also is a good mouth cleansing agent.

Digestion supplements Recommendations :
Digest & Cleanse – used for gastrointestinal problems when cleansing is needed.
Large canine 1 capsule 1-2 times per day
Small canine 1/2 – 1 capsule per day
The supplements assist in digestion depending on the condition. Not all the supplements are appropriate. This is why a diagnosis is important. Using enzymes that are not needed is wasting money. Although many of the supplements are used together selecting the one or two that solve the problem is the most effective.

Essential Oils For Pain, Inflammation In General
Panaway – USE – BONE PAIN – Often in ligament, tendon, and bone injuries there is inflammation. The joint becomes hot from the inflammation. Wintergreen/peppermint are powerful cooling oils and relieve the pain by dilating the vessels and releasing some of the warmth. It is especially useful in acute injury. The Helichrysum is a very powerful soft tissue to general pain reliever. Clove provides pain relief but also aids in infectious causes of sore joints. Relieve It – USE SOFT TISSUE- This blend is used with Panaway to aid in reducing the swelling from soft tissue injury. The spruce is steroid like in properties so it helps with acute or chronic inflammation. It can be used layered on top of the panaway or use together in a specialized blend. Marila Veterinary Clinic uses this oil for abdomen, sinus, bladder, and tumors, in those cases where conventional medication needs an extra boost or frequency of medication does not equal need for analgesia
Cassia and Copaiba -Two oils that address the need for a COX 2 inhibitor and a Steroid – both oils are added to blends to specifically address the need for this type of analgesia or anti-inflammatory used in both soft tissue and orthopedic situations.

Treasure of the Season – a new essential oil blend but maybe gone
Ingredients: Frankincense†, Frereana Frankincense†, Idaho Balsam Fir†, and Cinnamon Bark†
This is a new essential oil that has been available. The oils included would make it a good blend to add to others. Uses – emotional, infectious, analgesia, dermatologic, etc. This oil may not available long term as it is on a limited time basis.

Massage Oils
Cellulite Magic – Useful for Lipomas and Sebaceous Cysts. Use in prevention and breaking down the size of some of these masses. Other oils are added to make the blend more specific for a certain patient.
Dragon Time – used as carrier oil for those pets who have endocrine issues. Used with more specific essential oils that address the individual problem
OrthoEase and Orthosport – use in orthopedic and musculoskeletal problems in the pet. Use as a carrier oil blend with other essential added to the bottle to make the new blend more specific for the individual needs of the pet.
Relaxation and Sensation– Blend that is used for anxiety and emotional problems in the pet. It is useful before training, after exercise, emotional trauma, rescues, adjustments and similar situations.
V6 – general carrier oil with no added essential oils. Used to mix other oil blends or dilute them.
All the above oil blends are used to dilute other blends, to mix in other oils to make them patient specific, or used alone for benefit of the blend itself.

Precautions For Essential Oils
DILUTE THE OILS especially if the pet has not been exposed to the oils before (see dilution chart)
CATS – OILS ARE NOT TOXIC TO THIS SPECIES….Essential oils need to be diluted more than with a Great Dane. That is just common sense. PURITY OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS is the most important issue with all pets but especially with the feline.
TOXCICITY is due to cheap, adulterated fake essential oils. Pure essential oils do not kill pets, extended in the oils do. There are situations where a “hot” oil can cause some redness in an area of the skin. There are situations where the oil may cause tingling or coolness or warmth in an area. All of these changes are handled by diluting the oil with a pure carrier oil. NOT WATER, water will make it worse and allow the oil to penetrate more. These situations are rare and resolve with dilution with a carrier oil.
OREGANO is hot oil that needs dilution in almost all cases if applied topically. Blends with oregano contained in them are not concerning due to the fact the oil itself is already diluted. Oregano is often used to remove ticks.
OILS THAT MUST BE DILUTED

OILS USEFUL AND SAFE – MILD TO SKIN
Thyme, tea tree, hyssop, eucalyptus, black pepper, rose, rosewood, ravensara, lavender, clary sage, pettigrain, geranium, ylangylang, roman chamomille, german chamomille, majorum, helichrysum, rosemary, peppermint, cedarwood, vetiver, sage, lemongrass, citronella (feline dilute) , melissa, lemon.
HOMEOPATHY Black pepper and Eucalyptus radiata sometimes counteract the homeopathic tinctures.
PHOTOSENSITIZATION avoid sun for 3 days after last use – citrus oils, bergomet, mandarin, orange.
EPILEPTIC AVOIDANCE – basil, laural, hyssop, nutmeg, rosemary, sage.
PREGNANCY AVOIDANCE overall the use of the oils is safe but a few are cautioned for use – carrot seed, corriander.
CARDIAC AVOIDANCE – Sage can increase blood pressure.
ADVERSE REACTIONS – preforming a skin test with 1 drop of oil to 6 drops of carrier, if there is no redness for the next 24-48 hours then the oil is ok to be used. Use an area where there is minimal hair. A slight pink is ok but red skin or hives are not. Reactions are handled by diluting with carrier until the reaction subsides.
RULE TO REMEMBER – USE OIL NOT WATER TO DILUTE. WATER MAKES THE OIL RUN AWAY – OIL MAKES THE OIL JOIN IN.

Instructions for Essential Oils
Start with the least amount of concentration and build up to more concentration especially with pets and their sensitive noses.
In most cases oils dispensed by the clinic are diluted from the full concentration of the original bottle. Further dilution can be done by adding a pure carrier oil (almond, grape seed, pure virgin olive) Diluting to a 50% mixture using the dispensed oils is usually a safe place to start. Take a small amount of the oil from the dispensed blend and add the carrier oil.
Diffusion is an excellent way to disperse the essential oils. Using 3-5 drops on a cotton ball placed next to a heat vent provides a way to diffuse that is very cost effective. If using a diffusor then follow the instructions on that device as to how to use correctly. Some oils are more viscous than others. Dilution of these oils with a less viscous oil is ideal. ie. Vetiver with Lemon – both good oils for concentration.
Place 3-4 drops of oil on pillows, blankets, throws, and areas where the pet resides.
Place 4-5 cotton balls saturated with oil into the dryer with clothes to allow the oils to permeate the clothes.
Place 3-5 drops of oil on a cloth or towel and wrap the pet up in it when resting with the pet.
Place 3-4 drops on a cloth and rub the cloth over the head and body of the pet to place a light cover of oil on the fur.
Place 3-5 drops of oil in between the pads of the forelimbs and hind limb. If dealing with a specific area of concern refer to the diagram that explains where certain vitaflex locations are on the paw. Do this 2-3 times per day.
The oils can also be put on the pinna of the ears and massaged into the flap. If the pet tolerates this then the frequency can be increased to 4-6 times per day. This is especially true if dealing with a serious condition.
If there is redness to the area or irritation then dilute the oil by an additional 50%.
Anytime there is an acute irritation dilute with oil not water. Water only serves to drive the oil in further and irritates more.
Place 1-2 drops inside the lip of the pet. This allows the oils to be absorbed quickly. This is important for post-op pain when the dose of conventional medications is at its maximum or there is a lag in drug timing and pain. This is used after surgery in the clinic or at home.
Oils can be used to help other alternative methods such as acupuncture, chiropractic, or therapeutic laser.
Using a RainDrop technique is another valuable way to dispense the oils to the pet. It involves the oils being placed along the spine and massage into the area. After layering oils the pet is wrapped in a warm moist cloth so the oils can penetrate better. Pain relief for the pet can involve using the oils every half hour if needed. Overdosing is not a problem …
Creating a spritz from the oils is used often for external parasites. This mix can be sprayed in the air, placed on objects, placed on the pet and the human, placed on the bedding to help repel parasites.
Adding oils to a humidifier is another way to distribute the oils especially in the case of respiratory conditions.
