Essential Use in the Pet - Notes from Talk - 3/2015.
Start with the least amount of concentration and build up to more concentration espeically with pets and their sensitive noses.
In most cases oils dispensed by the clinic are diluted from the full concentration of the original bottle. Further dilution can be done by adding a pure carrier oil (almond, grape seed, pure virgin olive) Diluting to a 50% mixture using the dispensed oils is usually a safe place to start. Take a small amount of the oil from the dispensed blend and add the carrier oil.
Diffusion is an excellent way to disperse the essential oils. Using 3-5 drops on a cotton ball placed next to a heat vent provides a way to diffuse that is very cost effective. If using a diffussor then follow the instructions on that device as to how to use correctly. Some oils are more viscous than others. Dilution of these oils with a less viscous oil is ideal. ie. Vetiver with Lemon - both good oils for concentration
Place 3-4 drops of oil on pillows, blankets, throws, and areas where the pet resides.
Place 4-5 cotton balls saturated with oil into the dryer with clothes to allow the oils to permiate the clothes
Place 3-5 drops of oil on a cloth or towel and wrap the pet up in it when resting with the pet
Place 3-4 drops on a cloth and rub the cloth over the head and body of the pet to place a light cover of oil on the fur.
Place 3-5 drops of oil inbetween the pads of the forelimbs and hindlimb. If dealing with a specific area of concern refer to the diagram that explains where certain vitaflex locations are on the paw. Do this 2-3 times per day.
The oils can also be put on the pinna of the ears and massaged into the flap. If the pet tolerates this then the frequency can be increased to 4-6 times per day. This is especially true if dealing with a serious condition.
If there is redness to the area or irritation then dilute the oil by an additional 50%.
Anytime there is an acute irritation dilute with oil not water. Water only serves to drive the oil in further and irratates more.
Place 1-2 drops inside the lip of the pet. This allows the oils to be absorbed quickly. This is important for post-op pain when the dose of conventional medications is at its maximum or there is a lag in drug timing and pain. This is used after surgery in the clinic or at home.
Oils can be used to help other altenative methods such as acupuncture, chiropractic, or therpeutic laser.
Using a RainDrop technique is another valuable way to dispense the oils to the pet. It involves the oils being placed along the spine and massage into the area. After layering oils the pet is wrapped in a warm moist cloth so the oils can penetrate better. Pain relief for the pet can involve using the oils every half hour if needed. Overdosing is not a problem ...
Creating a spritz from the oils is used often for external parasites. This mix can be sprayed in the air, placed on objects, placed on the pet and the human, placed on the bedding to help repel parasites.
Adding oils to a humifier is another way to distribute the oils especiallly in the case of respiratory conditions.
Bone pain.
It is summer time and your cat wants to go out. Fighting is a common problem faced by the owner and the veterinary clinic. Cat bite abscess are a common result of the encounter. Most are not serious and the cat recovers but as the cat ages and the immune system ages, the wounds heal with more potential for complications Most punctures are small and they cover over quickly. It is not until days later when the cat is lethargic and has a fever does the owner notice the swelling. With proper veterinary care the wound resolves but there is always the potential for complications especially when the wound involves the head, legs, joints, abdomen, or chest. Essential oils can be used when the wound is discovered. Later the essential oil can be used to prevent the wound from getting worse, avoiding a morbid cat and costly veterinary care. Essential oils can be used when the first sign of a puncture. This could prevent the progression to a full abscess Essential oils can be used to complement the coventional care given as well. The oils reccomended are Melrose, Lavender, Frankenscense, Thieves, and Purification. Diluting the oils with V6 in a solution of 15 drops of Essential oils to 15 ml mixing oi is suggested. Use the mix on the wound 3-4 times per day till resolution of the wound.
During a fight cats will spit and hiss and thus be exposed to each other saliva. Saliva transmits feline leukemia, feline infectious peritonitis, and feline immunodefficiency virus. The most common is feline leukemia. Incubation of the virus results in the cat transmitting the virus to others in the home. Diagnosis is through blood and clinical signs. There is a vaccine but is not 100%. Prevention is possible if cats are kept indoors. Most cats with feline leukemia die from the infection within a few years unless support measures are used. This includes immune support, whole body support, L-Lysine, Duralactin, and antivirals. Use of the essential oil blend - Thieves has been valuable to decrease prevention. The virus is not stable in the environment so cleaning and throwing blankets helps prevent transmission. Thives can be used to wash the beds, blankets , and clothes. Lemon can be added to the water bowl. Diffusing the oils can eliminate virus load. Oils such as Melrose, Immunpower, and exodus II are also important.
Cats who are outdoors are exposed to parasites both external and internal. Fleas and tick control is important in this area. Use of purification, citronella, lemongrass, thieves have been used in a a spray. Use of parafree, idaho tansy, digize, ocetea have been used to help eliminate internal parasites. Tapeworms are common if they ingest mice, moles, or other prey. the oils are used topically, on the paws/ears and given orallly by gel capsule.
Use of coventional methods is combined with the oils many times to be more complete and help with resistance to conventional methods that has become more common recently.
